Brings to Markham's attention that Ex-Governor Vardaman mad reference to his poems at a speech at a high school. When asked about it the Governorsaid that Markham writes all the beautyful things; asks which poem tells about the earth being the shadow and the spiritual things being real; also asks if he had any poems ready to be published in the "Nautilus Magazine.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
